A 45-mile stretch of river. Villages, bridges, roads, 14 hydropower plants, an entire border crossing — undone in hours.
An Glacial Avalanche high in the Himalayas triggered a chain reaction: a temporary dam burst upstream on the Lhende River, sending a flash flood tearing through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli valleys. In hours, it erased homes, roads, bridges, and the Rasuwa-Gadi border crossing — a lifeline for trade and Kailash pilgrims for generations.
More than 900 people are confirmed dead. Over 4,000 are still missing. Nearly 90,000 lives have been upended.
Children are growing up without parents. Kids were separated from families mid-morning, on their way to school. Some are still searching for parents who never made it home. Others have already learned they won't. Generations of work, swept away in minutes. Farms, shops, guesthouses, hydropower jobs — the businesses families spent lifetimes building sat on land the river simply took. There's nothing left to reopen. And the danger hasn't passed. Two lakes have formed upstream from the collapse, and authorities have warned communities downstream that more flooding could come without notice. Families sheltering near the riverbanks are being told to stay alert, not to rebuild yet — that the water may not be done.
This is not a story about a distant tragedy. It's about a place we know. Rasuwa is the gateway to Langtang — trekking trails, hydropower workers, farming families, guides who've walked these valleys their whole lives.
Khangri Experience Foundation is working with local partners to reach the families who need it most — clean water, shelter, medical care, and support for children who've lost everyone. Then, once the water is safe, the harder work of helping families rebuild.

Thame Relief Fund
Thanks to the generosity and support of donors from around the world, we successfully raised $109,435.00 to aid the affected families in the Thame GLOF incident on August 2024. On October 30, 2024, we directly distributed these funds to 53 families who had suffered significant losses, ensuring they received immediate financial assistance to meet their most urgent needs. Why Girls’ Education Matters
For many families in remote regions of Nepal, poverty is a daily reality. That hardship becomes devastating when a father is lost in the mountains while trying to provide for his family. In these moments, education often becomes an impossible luxury.
In many communities, boys are prioritized for schooling, while girls are quietly left behind.
Without education, these girls face a future of instability, vulnerability, and increased risk of exploitation and human trafficking. Their lives become defined by circumstances they never chose.
